The Wonders of Coconut Oil

Before I started making products with nutrient-rich raw goats milk, I used coconut oil for everything. I used it for cooking, lotion, to take my makeup off, under eye treatments, you name it, I used coconut oil. Once I started researching soap and cream recipes I knew that two ingredients were non-negotiable going into each product: raw goats milk and coconut oil. I’ve discussed goats milk pretty extensively so I want to concentrate on coconut oil and why this miracle oil is my go to for everything, even toothpaste!

I was first introduced to coconut oil because of my dogs. I have two working German Shepherds, Emmitt and Pheobe, that I am coo-coo about. Their diets are monitored more than my own, they take vitamins and supplements daily, I brush their teeth nightly, and they do not fall asleep until I “tuck” each of them in (no joke, ask Mark).

Emmitt and I were training one day in an open field in Orange County, California. He was doing a lot of running and was going in and out of thick brush. We finished training and went home to relax. I noticed that he was starting to limp and not put any pressure on his front paw. With further investigation, I noticed that he had a foxtail stuck in his paw and a couple on his pad. I was able to pull those out with no problems but the one on the top of his paw ended up with a vet visit. They actually had to surgically remove it and it was going to leave a nasty sore. They suggested a couple creams but looking at the ingredients, they were loaded with chemicals and because it was an area where he could lick, I was not going to take that chance.

I started researching and came across an article about coconut oil, the healing benefits, and it was safe for dogs! I bought a little jar and started putting it directly on his wound. Within a day, there were significant improvements, with the entire sore gone in a couple weeks.

Once I saw the results with Emmitt, I started trying it out on myself. As I have said before, I have really sensitive skin so I tried a little at time and I was very pleased with the results although I was not a fan of how “greasy” I felt when I used it as a lotion. It was a lifesaver when we would come back to Colorado and my skin would dry out almost instantly!

Coconut Oil has been the best-kept secret in areas that grew coconuts until recently. It has the ability to penetrate the skin on a deeper level because of the low molecular weight and the way that it bonds with proteins. I hate when I was using regular lotion and it would work for an hour or so and then I felt like I had to reapply throughout the entire day. Coconut Oil has saturated fat that helps the skin stay moisturized by preventing moisture loss through skin pores. These fats give the skin a healthy, smooth, even tone.

The reason that the coconut oil was so effective with Emmitt is because of the antibacterial properties. Coconut Oil has three fatty acids: Capric, Caprylic, and Lauric. Lauric acid, which makes up 85% of coconut oil, also posses disinfectant and antimicrobial properties helping to protect against as well as heal microbial infections. The only other natural substance that is that high in Lauric acid happens to be breast milk.

I have extremely fair skin and I do not tan, I burn and become fire engine red almost immediately. When we do chores, even in the dead middle of summer, I have long sleeves, long pants, wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, and I am covered in sunscreen. I was really excited to find out that Coconut Oil has a natural SPF of 4. Now I know that especially for me, that doesn’t offer a lot of protection, but if I am going outside for a brief moment or running an errand, I always love that I have a little bit of protection and can steer clear of the chemically loaded sunscreens.

Pure, unrefined virgin coconut oil is one of the most natural products available today. What great information on how good Coconut Oil is and the benefits of it. I will admit, I was skeptical at first because it did feel oily, but after using the creams that Tara makes with Coconut Oil, I can tell you my skin feels better than ever. I refuse to use any other Body Butter, Soap and Chapstick – they are perfect for any kind of skin.
