Shearing Day!

I didn’t realize how much work went into having the alpacas sheared so I was incredibly grateful for the previous owners teaching us how to have a successful shearing day. The alpacas need to be sheared once summer rolls around. In Colorado, it can sometimes be difficult because it has snowed in May so usually shearing happens at the end of May. There is a balance though because you don’t want to shear them too early (in case Colorado decides to have a late snow storm) but you also don’t want to shear them too late. Their fibers are incredibly...

How Five Became Eight

How Five Became Eight

I was incredibly apprehensive about getting alpacas. For all I knew, it was a smaller llama right? (FYI do NOT call an alpaca a llama to someone that is die hard about their alpacas, apparently it is extremely offensive. Pause for eye rolling). Anyway, we went to an alpaca farm where the owner was trying to find good homes for his alpacas before he moved to the east coast. In its heyday, his farm had over 40 alpacas but he was down to about 10. He was showing us five that he thought would be good for us to start...

Alpaca Fiber, Who Knew?!

“So… there’s this guy that has an alpaca farm. He’s moving and needs a good home for his alpacas.” I knew right when Mark said “So…..” all dragged out and hesitant that we were either starting another project or we were getting another animal. Turns out, we were getting five. The story of the alpacas coming to live with us and how five turned into eight will be next week. I want to focus on alpaca fiber and how this fiber will make you feel like royalty! Many people group alpaca fiber and sheep wool into the same category but...

The Wonders of Coconut Oil

Before I started making products with nutrient-rich raw goats milk, I used coconut oil for everything. I used it for cooking, lotion, to take my makeup off, under eye treatments, you name it, I used coconut oil. Once I started researching soap and cream recipes I knew that two ingredients were non-negotiable going into each product: raw goats milk and coconut oil. I’ve discussed goats milk pretty extensively so I want to concentrate on coconut oil and why this miracle oil is my go to for everything, even toothpaste! I was first introduced to coconut oil because of my dogs....

Meet Guapo!

Meet Guapo!

I thought we might go a full year without getting any new animals but nope! I was wrong! Mark and I have been researching where we could take Snap, Crackle, and Pop this fall to get pregnant but the choices have been very limited. Not many people own a buck (a male goat) because they require more work, separate housing area, and strong fencing. We wanted our girls to mate with a buck with good temperament as well as pure Nubian so we were really being picky. We run into the woman that sold us Snap, Crackle, and Pop every...
